Two landscapes

I just delivered these two landscapes on cotton rag paper to the Joan Clancy gallery in An Rinn, Dungarvan. They're of the ruins and the harbour of ballinskelligs, near the Cill rialaig artist retreat... One of my favourite places..

West coast landscape

Back to landscapes for a change. I find when I get stuck, when the inspiration isn't flowing strong, I can return to more figurative work and that generates ideas for the abstract. Landscapes are like practise, going back to basics. So here's one of a little bay in Kerry..

Rothe house paintings

I installed 2 of the 3 recent paintings I did based on compositions within the German expressionist films cabinet of dr caligari and der golem. This is for the Kilkenny arts festival. The largest of the 3 is almost 3 metres wide and was the largest painting I've completed. The fumes as I was working on it nearly killed me!

Where Do You Belong? Cill Rialaig exhibition

An exhibition of my paintings will open tomorrow, the 6th May, 2012 at the Cill Rialaig Gallery, Ballinskelligs, Co. Kerry. 26 paintings from the last 4 years, all connected with my various residencies at Cill Rialaig will be on show. They all have a strong connection to the landscape of the west, the colours of the earth, sheer cliffs, burnt heather, the vibrant gorse, all the subtle tones and atmosphere of the west coastline. The opening is from 12 to 2. Please come along if you can!

Earth Studies

Here are some studies I did recently at Cill Rialaig Artists Retreat in Kerry. They, like a lot of my paintings are inspired by the earth, the land, the energy within the landscape and the atmosphere it creates. I find in the west, it is heightened dramatically, as opposed to the flat farmlands of Kilkenny where I live. These paintings along with many more will be shown at the Cill Rialaig Gallery for my exhibition in May/June.

concepts

Here are 2 concepts I did this week for a pitch. The programme will explore the myths and folklore of different countries and how these myths encourage the native people to protect the environment. One is from Borneo about the animals dancing to try and make you smile, the other from Madagascar about a mother telling her little boy not to hurt the butterfly because its a symbol for a guest calling to the house.

album art

Here's a painting I did for an music album cover by 3 bands from Thomastown. They asked various artists to do images and people could choose which album cover they wanted - a good idea!
